Exam Preparation
MRI
- No pacemakers or defibrillators – please call for more information.
- If you have any implanted metal or a condition that may be a contraindication for an MRI, please call and speak with an MRI technologist.
- Bring all documentation regarding stents, devices, and implants to appointment.
- MRI Abdomen: Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours before the procedure.
- MRCP: Nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours before the procedure.
- MRI Enterography: Nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours before the procedure. Arrive 1 hour prior to appointment to drink contrast.
If you previously had an allergic reaction specifically to MRI contrast, you may not be able to be scanned in an outpatient setting. Please call the center to discuss your allergy history as soon as possible, For your safety you may need to be rescheduled at UT Medical Center with pre-medication if applicable.
CT SCAN
WITHOUT contrast:
- For fracture, trauma or Kidney stones: Eat and drink as normal and arrive 15 minutes before appointment.
- Calcium Score exams: No caffeine or smoking the night before the exam.
WITH contrast:
- CT Abdomen/pelvic: No preparation required. Arrive 30-45 minutes prior to the appointment to drink contrast if oral contrast was ordered.
- CT Enterography: Nothing to eat for 4-6 hours before the procedure. You may have small sips of water to take medications as needed. Arrive 1 hour prior to appointment to drink contrast.
If you previously had an allergic reaction to intravenous contrast for a CT, angiogram, or heart catheterization, for your safety you may not be able to be scanned in an outpatient setting. Call the center to discuss your allergy history as soon as possible, you may need to be scanned at UT medical center with pre-medication if applicable.
ULTRASOUND
ABDOMEN (Gallbladder, Liver, Pancreas & Renal)
- Do not eat or drink 8 hours before appointment.
- Do not smoke after midnight the night before exam.
PELVIC
- Finish 32oz of water one hour prior to procedure.
- Pelvic patients MUST have a FULL bladder for exam.
RENAL
- Be well hydrated. Drink non-carbonated liquids until exam.
DEXA
- Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before procedure
XRAY
- No preparation required
